SVR

The SVR, the Russian external intelligence service, is the successor of the general directorate of the KGB and deals with civil intelligence gathering on behalf of the Kremlin. It is in permanent competition with Russia’s military intelligence service, the GRU, which has more means and a bigger staff. President Vladimir Putin recently decided to merge the two services into a single Soviet-style ministry of security. Intelligence Online is closely tracking the project.
