    Saudi filling 'Empty Quarter' with military tests

    Amid renewed tensions between Tehran and Washington and exchanges of fire with the Houthis, the Saudi military is looking to bolster its capabilities. To this end, a small company is pitching itself as a provider of testing services for systems acquired abroad in order to ensure their effectiveness before their deployment within the Saudi armed forces.

    The programme requested by France's National Oversight Commission for Intelligence-Gathering Techniques to centralise data obtained from hacked computers and mobiles is well under way. The intrusive technique enabling services to access encrypted messaging services has seen a sharp increase in use.

    The ruling against former Politburo member Ma Xingrui, made public on 14 July, formally brings to a close one of the most sensitive cases in the ongoing wave of purges in Beijing. But the indictment, limited to personal and economic misconduct, is significant mainly for what is left unsaid.
