    Beijing starts recomposing Central Military Commission

    Reduced by purges to just two members, the supreme body of the People's Liberation Army is to be reconstituted before the army's centenary in 2027. The party leadership wants to dispel the image of a military institution mired in speculation and to demonstrate that the purge remains on course.

    As peace talks between Washington and Tehran continue, a critical minerals refinery project led by Saudi parastatal group Maaden, with US government backing, is being held back by financing and logistics obstacles associated with the conflict.

    Bangladesh, China, India and the Burmese opposition are all courting ethnic militia chief Twan Mrat Naing, whose army is fighting the ruling junta in Arakan State. These parties each have a stake in this region in western Myanmar and are seeking to cover their backs as the fate of state's city of Sittwe, under attack from the Arakan Army, remains uncertain.
