The Order of Malta is devoted to humanitarian missions but has also long served as a handy screen for discreet diplomacy and influence. Its new leader, Fra' John Dunlap, now finds himself walking a tightrope between providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine and nurturing ties with Russia's Orthodox Church, all under the Vatican's watchful eye.
