    Before the ceasefire ended between Iran and the United States, Oman discreetly called on its Western allies to help remove underwater mines from its territorial waters that were laid by Tehran.

    The defence ministry has added an anti-communist dimension to the ideological training programme required of military academy graduates, as part of a wider effort to counter Chinese infiltration. That decision came after intelligence services warned of the priorities Xi Jinping was set to establish regarding the Taiwan issue.
