    Reappointed in 2024, the Australian spymaster's second term has not been easy. Amid ongoing espionage attempts – notably by China – it has been especially marked by Australia's deadliest terrorist attack. With a commission of inquiry due to publish its findings by the end of the year, the spymaster has spoken out in a book to be published next week.

    In recent years, analysts monitoring the launch tests carried out by the Chinese People's Liberation Army's nuclear unit have noted a sharp drop in activity in July and August. Government purges are suspected to be the main reason for the lull, but other factors could also be having an impact.
