New counterterrorism chief Brett Holmgren faces unprecedented array of threats

Just months ahead of the US presidential election, the former head of diplomatic intelligence, who has close ties to top Democrats, has been urgently appointed to lead the National Counterterrorism Center.

At a time when former intelligence community officials are denouncing the lethargy of President Joe Biden's administration in the field of counter-terrorism, the hasty arrival of Brett Holmgren at the head of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) demonstrates, on the contrary, a form of urgency.

The former assistant secretary of state for intelligence and research, who has a wealth of experience in counter-terrorism, was this month tasked with replacing Christine Abizaid, who took up her post
